Synopsis
S’il est un conflit remarquable à tous égards, il ne peut s'agir que de la guerre civile américaine, plus connue de ce côté de l'Atlantique sous la désignation de Guerre de sécession.
Ce conflit qui opposa, de 1861 à 1865, les armées du Sud à celles de l’Union de la presque centenaire république des Etats-Unis d'Amérique du nord, demeure dans les annales comme la dernière guerre classique - par certains aspects, héritière des guerres napoléoniennes - et la première vraie guerre moderne du XXe siècle, avec, pour la première fois, une utilisation massive et souvent intensive des technologies « de pointe ».
Ce conflit fratricide est le fruit d'une longue suite de compromis politiques, économiques et idéologiques entre deux civilisations qui ne masquaient que bien imparfaitement les fractures. Les féroces appétits du Nord opposés aux principes d'indépendance des états du Sud ne pouvaient mener qu'à l'explosion.
