À propos de l'auteur
Born in Egypt, of European parents, Daniel Nadler is an American living in New York. A graduate of Cornell University and a Professional Engineer, his career in building construction has taken him overseas, and he also has traveled widely. For decades, Mr. Nadler and his Iranian wife, Serga, have been drawn to Chinese Export polychrome porcelain which they found scattered throughout New England and elsewhere in their travels. As their small collection grew, questions caused by lack of information concerning late wares, stimulated their curiosity. An attempt to piece together the evolution of enamelled wares, focussing largely on XIXth century pieces, produced this survey. As a backdrop to evolution of porcelain decoration, Mr. Nadler presents the historical background of China during the two-and-a-half centuries of Qing rule. Aside from collecting porcelain, Mr. Nadler always has had interest in photography which expanded to include computers. Photographs and digitized files for most of the illustrations in this text were taken by the Nadlers.

Because of their manufacturing secret, the Chinese maintained a monopoly, which until it was broken in Europe, made it worth sailing around half the globe to acquire. Nowhere else could be found chinaware resistant to chipping, in such elegant shapes, and with such colorful enameling. Continuing well after porcelain had been duplicated in the West, Canton's enamellers remained active, producing both stock pieces and special orders. This continued throughout the XIXth century despite natural disasters, wars, and insurrections. The variety of special-order wares, or "Chine de Commande" as the French aptly called them, is over- whelming. Diligently, the Celestial Empire's craftsmen strove to meet the "barbarians" demands. It is thus a china decorated for many fathers, each with his individual and selective taste. This leads us to consider Export porcelain as: China to order. Based in New York, most of our finds came from the surrounding area-thus, almost by definition, were XIXth century imports. As our small collection swelled, we strove to place our finds in some historical context. This proved a difficult task, for extant reference books on Chinese Export Porcelain, while replete with information on the XVIII century, are, with rare exceptions bare of data covering the period after 1800. Most of the splendidly illustrated volumes conclude in essence with: "Following Qianlong's death (in 1798.) porcelain production and decoration degenerated completely." While quantity certainly ebbed, we leave readers of this Survey to judge for themselves whether quality did indeed plunge dismally in the second century of the Qing dynasty. Contrarywise, we hold that many pieces, created in the early decades of the XIX century, or after the hiatus caused by the Taiping Rebellion, are quite as dazzling as those produced at the height of Kangxi and Yongzheng effervescence. This study was therefore undertaken with two aims: To follow the evolution of Export polychrome porcelain from the outset of the Qing dynasty to its demise. But more specifically, to fill the lacuna which exists, by placing XIXth century production before a historical backdrop. To treat the entire polychrome output in all its related export, commercial and social implications is quite beyond our competence. Therefore, we shall tread lightly over the XVII and XVIII centuries, which many scholars have illuminated. We shall try to cast a more focused light on the XIX century. Descriptions of porcelains will alternate with an overview of events taking place in China. Those readers who are familiar with the current literature might want to skip the first few chapters and cast their attention on the later years. For them, Chapters XII or XIII might be a reasonable place to start. Chapter XIV deals with the years before the Taiping Rebellion; Chapter XV with those after that watershed period. We hope that, by perusing this Survey with its illustrations, the reader will become as enthused as we have grown with this hybrid art-form-which is from China-without being Chinese-and Western-only by dint of a thirst for the exotic." excerpt from the foreword.
