Synopsis

The tragedy of Coriolan, by the enormously prolific and popular playwright Alexandre Hardy, offers an outstanding example of French tragic treatment of antique historical material in the baroque period.

It also presents special interest as an intertext for Shakespeare's adaptation of essentially the same material (Plutarch's Life of Coriolanus), in Coriolanus (1608), which was probably closely contemporary, although the date of Hardy's work is less certain. Richard Hillman's introduction to his translation (the first in English) develops this perspective, while Fabien Cavaillé's introduction to his new edition of the French text provides a perspective on Hardy's impressive artistry in its theatrical context.
