Computer Aided Learning and Instruction is becoming a rewarding approach for vocational education. At the academic level however, its introduction is progressing slowly.
Higher scientific and technical education is of special interest, given the many ways in which computers are -and could be- used in these knowledge fields. In such a context, real examples of scientific courseware as well as reseach efforts aiming at the integration of advanced techniques in CAL, in practical and useful ways, are most relevant.
Coming alter several workshops and conferences (Liverpool Polytechnic, UK: 1987, 1988 & 1989; TU-Delft, NL: 1990; CATS'90, Barcelona, SP: 1990), CALISCE'91 was sponsored by the EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne) and the International Latsis Foundation, Geneva and organized by EPFL's Computer Aided Learning Laboratory (LEAO).
The papers collected in these proceedings deal with many issues, among which:
- future perspectives,
- simulation and methodology,
- artificial intelligence and hypermedia in CAL,
- authoring & development tools & techniques,
- development & experimentation of courseware in Science and Engineering.
