This illustrated guide is based on an exhibition of cars, European and North American models, held at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from May 11 - October 15, 1995. The book reflects the imagination and creativity of a team of inventors, manufacturers, engineers and designers who combined to create the ideal car. The end-product reflects the marriage between the beauty of line and mechanical ingenuity. The first part of the book covers from 1899 to 1925, with rare experimental models, racing cars and exceptional automobiles of avant-garde stylistic appeal. Unique models, from museums all over the world, demonstrate that the racing car of that era still continues to influence the mechanical engineering and aesthetics of the modern car. The second part examines the era from 1925 to 1960, which focused on aerodynamics and its most beautiful expressions. This, the era of mass-produced cars, was witness to the great stylistic inventions of North America and Europe. The thirties saw the advent of the beautiful production-line automobiles. The forties brought us major stylistic changes and innovations that set the standards for performance and design for the second half of the century. The third and final part of the book examines the future, and gives the reader an idea of the issues facing auto-makers in the future. It reflects on the cars that now occupy our lives and society in general. Of predominance are the latest concepts on the high-performance, ultra-safe and environmentally-friendly cars of the future. Presented are carefully-selected experimental cars, where the designers and builders are exploring new materials, new powertrains and new designs.
