Synopsis

This work contains Matthew Hopkin’s treatise on Witchcraft dating from 1647 and an essay about Hopkins by Montague Summers. Hopkins was an England self-proclaimed Witch-finder General. From 1644 until 1647, he travelled from village to village, trying and torturing those unfortunates accused of witchcraft.

Hopkins was the driving force behind the execution of more than a hundred alleged Witches. The Discovery of Witches was designed as a guide to finding, interrogating and executing suspected Witches. Various marks upon the body are mentioned as devilish, while tests of Witchcraft such as swimming—whereby a woman was forcibly immersed in water—were devised as a means of determining a person’s affinity to illicit magic.

Committed to quality and authenticity, all images, seals and characters have been fully traced. All texts have been fully transcribed and edited. No scans.
