This is a fascinating and revealing exploration of the history and collections of the Musee d'art de Joliette. The Musee d'art de Joliette is one of the few North-American museums outside the major cities to have pursued acquisition and temporary exhibition policies aimed at conserving and disseminating both historical and contemporary art. Rather than a straightforward guide to the collections, this lavishly illustrated volume sheds light on the history of the museum itself, as well as that of its holdings. To this end four authors offer original essays on episodes that have shaped the collection's development. Complimenting these essays are 120 selected works presented in order of their acquisition. This unusual way of arranging the catalogue entries contrasts with the chronological and typological ordering generally imposed by art historical convention. In contrast, it offers an accurate view of the diversity of styles and forms collected by the museum throughout its history.
