This second volume recounts the surprising voyage of Meromi, a 9 year old Yanomami girl who is swept into an unexpected adventure in the rivers and jungles of the Amazon. With the help of improvised allies, she seeks a way to discourage intruders and make them leave the forest. Aspects of traditional Yanomami life in the Rainforest are woven into the fanciful story. The author’s enchanting illustrations transform readers into fellow travelers on Meromi’s magical quest.

After studying painting and other art techniques at R.I.S.D., I got my BFA at San Francisco Art Institute. In 1977 I fell in love with Paris, where I still live. For over twelve years, my life and my art have been transformed during winter trips to Venezuela and Brazil to Yanomami communities. My enchantment with the Amazon Rainforest evolved into burning my sculptures as performance art to protest against the ongoing destruction of the world’s tropical forests and the degradation of the way of life of the indigenous peoples who depend on them. I’ve been inspired to write a series of books for children that describe the way of life of the Yanomami communities and the magical connection they have with the nature that surrounds them.
