The trajectory of a projectile depends on a certain number of parameters which interact with each other meaning that their combined effects change from one moment to another. Despite the technical advances made in measuring wind for long-distance shooting, the author believes, without doubt, that a human is still, at this time, superior to a machine in terms of the precision and speed of the analysis of these factors. He analyses the different factors to be considered by a shooter when reading the terrain in order to understand the wind. The behaviour of the wind in an urban environment is similarly addressed. Other parameters have an influence on accuracy without entering into the field of external ballistics. This means that they create inaccuracy without having a direct influence on the projectile. In an unprecedented way, the author demonstrates how accuracy is reduced due to the effect of mirage, the consistency of the shooter’s aim and even the shooter’s visual defects. When viewed separately, these different elements allow us to understand the individual effects of each phenomenon. When combined, these effects show us that the prediction of a trajectory remains complex. This manual provides us with a number of elements to improve our reading of the terrain and thus understand the wind. Understanding all the phenomena addressed in this work will allow us to improve our abilities with the aim of putting them into practice in the field.
