Synopsis

Anyone can be a business analyst! If we recognize that Business Analysis, with a capital A, represents one of the key factors in the success of major information technology (IT) transformation projects, how is it possible to say such a thing? Maybe because it’s true? There are probably almost as many paths leading to the role of IT Business Analyst as there are IT Business Analysts! In such a context, how do we recognize the authentic business analyst? An excellent question that led to an attempt at an answer developed and explored in this essay, which presents a proposal for a business analysis framework with its uses for evaluation, recruitment, and retention, taking the authentic business analyst as a model.

The proposed framework is not about methodologies, tools, or techniques. Rather, the framework defines key competencies and soft skills that the authentic business analyst possesses and that enable the individual to perform the role. Indeed, the framework provides examples of applications of these competencies that the authentic business analyst must be able to accomplish, depending on the level reached.

Managers of teams of business analysts working on IT transformation projects discover in this proposal a framework that allows them to implement a practice that is more standardized, but still flexible, concrete, simple to apply and adaptable to the specificity and magnitude of their company.

Business analysts, aspiring business analysts or people who play this role without having the title, find the competencies and soft skills required to be authentic IT business analysts, with concrete examples that allow them to evaluate themselves, understand how to progress and recognize a culture that values business analysis and that facilitates the professional development of IT business analysts.
