This book provides theoretical perspectives and practical experiences on smart governance for smart cities. It presents a balanced linkage between research, policies and practices on this area. The authors discuss the sustainability challenges raised by rapid urbanization, challenges with smart governance models in various countries, and a new governance paradigm seen as a capable approach able to overcome social, economic and environmental sustainability problems. The authors include case studies on transformation, adaption and transfers; and country, regional, municipal contextualization. Also included are best practices on monitoring and evaluating smart governance and impact assessment. The book features contributions from researchers, academics, and practitioners in the field.

Nuno Lopes is the leading researcher at the National Digital Transformation Collaborative Lab in Portugal and a professor in a part-time basis at the University of Minho. Former coordinator and founder of the research line on smart cities at the University of United Nations. He holds two Postdoctoral positions, one on Computer Science at the University of Coimbra and other on Electronic Governance at the United Nations University. Since 1998 he has been teaching several courses in diverse areas of computer science and mathematics at different public, private, national and international universities. During his working life, he has been involved in several national, European and international projects, such as Electronic Governance for Context-Specific Public Service Delivery, Knowledge Society Policy Handbook, Policy Monitoring on Digital Technology for Inclusive Education, Intelligent Computing for Internet and Services, Internet of Things for Disabled People, Smart Defence and Smart Cities for Sustainable Development. He also delivers on a regular basis professional courses, seminars, and workshops on ICT, computer networks, cybersecurity, smart cities, amongst others.
