Synopsis

This textbook goes at the heart of telecommunications engineering by explaining the concepts and linking them to how things are designed by standards bodies and implemented by infrastructure manufacturers. Tailored to senior undergraduate and graduate students and newly practicing engineers, this book presents the fundamental concepts in a concise manner but retaining the rigor needed to truly understand wireless communications. Importantly, the book ties these developments to how these concepts are implemented in fielded systems, discussing the motivations behind the design choices made in 4G and 5G wireless communications. The book bridges the gap between theory and application, presenting the fundamental developments while tying the concepts to the work of 3GPP and how networks are implemented. Furthermore, the book covers some key practical issues. The book features a full suite of classroom materials including PowerPoints, a solutions manual and tutorials.

À propos de l'auteur

Ivo Maljevic is a principal technology architect within TELUS' technology strategy team, where he focuses on defining a long-term vision for radio access network (RAN) evolution, radio performance characterization and modeling, radio spectrum strategy and technology standardization. His current experience includes 13 years of work with TELUS. Additionally, Ivo is an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto. Prior to TELUS, he was with Soma Networks, and before that, he worked at Motorola Canada. He received the B.S. degree from the University of Podgorica in 1991, the M.S. degree from the University of Belgrade in 1995, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto, Canada, in 2004, all in Electrical Engineering.

Raviraj Adve holds the rank of Professor in the Edward S Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto (UofT). Before joining UofT, he worked as a Senior Research Engineer on contract with the Air Force Research Laboratory, Rome, NY, USA. Prof. Adve received his BTech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and PhD from Syracuse University in 1996. His PhD received the Syracuse University Outstanding Dissertation Award. He joined UofT in 2000 where his research focuses on the analysis and design of wireless communication and radar systems. Ravi is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Faris Alfarhan is a senior member of the technical engineering staff at InterDigital. Faris has 12 years of experience in the wireless industry. He is an active member of 3GPP and is recognized for his leadership roles in standardization discussions in 3GPP RAN2 and RAN1 working groups. His domain of expertise include MAC and physical layer protocol design, wireless network design and optimization, network performance simulations, and future technologies. He is an author of numerous patents on L1/L2 wireless protocols. Prior to InterDigital, he worked as a wireless system engineer at InfoVista where he designed algorithms and product specifications for Planet, a leading RAN planning and optimization software. Faris received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from McGill University, Montreal, in 2010, and a master's degree specializing in wireless communications and networks from the University of Toronto in 2012.
