This new edition is an easy-to-read guide outlining specific differences in communication, clinical therapies, medications, protocols, and other critical precision medicine approaches to the care of African Americans. African Americans still face significant health disparities in the United States across numerous health measures. Despite their uniquely poor health outcomes, no other book has taken a laser focus on this community and shed light on best practices based on confirmed and replicated research outcomes. From cardiovascular disease to cancer, the physiology, pharmacology, prevention, and other interventions are, in many cases, uniquely different for African Americans. As such, the optimal approach to achieving the best outcomes is different.
This updated edition expands on the success of the first with a distinct precision medicine approach. Data is updated throughout to improve and refine the perspectives given. New sections have been added covering bias, pain, emotional and cultural intelligence, and sickle cell disease. Updated, expanded, and including more specialists in their field, this second edition advances approaches and practices that continue to benefit the clinical care of African Americans.Les informations fournies dans la section « Synopsis » peuvent faire référence à une autre édition de ce titre.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, and graduate of Williams College, Gregory L. Hall, MD, is an internal medicine physician and expert in African American health. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine and an Associate Professor in both the Internal Medicine and Integrative Medical Sciences departments at Northeast Ohio Medical University. Dr. Hall was a governor-appointed member of the Ohio Commission on Minority Health and was Chairman for many years. He is the Board President of the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, the second largest in Ohio.
Dr. Hall wrote "Patient-Centered Clinical Care for African Americans: A Concise, Evidence-Based Guide to Important Differences and Better Outcomes," which was the first comprehensive book detailing the optimal clinical care of African Americans. He hosts "Bridging the Gap," a continuing medical education (CME) lecture series for the Pri-Med CME organization, which recently received an award for "Best Practice in Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Medical Education" from the National Association of Medical Education Companies (NAMEC).
He established the non-profit National Institute for African American Health. It mentors Black pre-med and medical students in their studies, facilitates research initiatives in partnership with academic institutions and provides an online resource for consumer health education.
Dr. Hall also hosts the podcast "Better Black Health," which interviews Black medical specialists regarding certain diseases, approaches to treatment for the Black community, and patients who discuss their personal health journeys.
At University Hospitals (UH), Hall was awarded the Edgar B. Jackson, Jr., MD Endowed Chair for Clinical Excellence & Diversity and works on hospital-wide equity and diversity initiatives. He is the Medical Director of University Hospitals' Cutler Center for Men, which takes a multidisciplinary approach to improving all men's health.
