Revue de presse

'Creativity is to discover a question that has never been asked.' This opening quote by author Kenya Hara in his earlier work Designing Design (2007) serves already to introduce the reader to his rather radical and subtractive philosophy of design. His latest title Ex-formation continues to build on this perspective, exploring themes of emptiness and voids in contemporary design Hara wants you to unknow the world. An advocate against viewing design as a solution and designers against problem solvers, Hara suggests that the real interest lies in the problem itself. Therefor, in contrast to 'information', 'ex-formation' becomes the starting point for any type of design. As a professor at Musahino Art University in Tokyo, Hara has devoted himself to the methodological and theoretical principles of design education, and in Ex-Formation presents a digest from over ten years of student seminars and final projects that explore a variety of themes through first aspiring to unknow them. The results, more often than not, are compelling and thought-provoking. --Design Anthology Magazine

Présentation de l'éditeur

Coinciding with the new edition of the bestseller Designing Design, Kenya Hara's latest book, Ex-formation, searches for the beginning of design in the unknown. For Kenya Hara, design begins with comprehension of the unknown. In contrast to "information," "exformation" describes how little we really know and thus becomes the starting point for any type of design. Based on a range of projects the book describes what "exformation" can look like in design practice and how this concept alters ur classic understanding of information design. Following the path embarked on in Designing Design (2007) and its successor, White (2010), Ex-formation continues to explore the void, absence, and indeterminacy in contemporary design.
