A fascinating treasury of drawings and plans from one of the 20th century s greatest architects, commented to open unprecedented insight into his design process. The importance of a drawing is immense, because it s the architect s language, said the architect Louis Kahn to his masterclass in 1967. While Kahn s built work has been extensively studied, this publication chooses instead to focus on his drawings as primary sources of insight into his architectural intelligence and imagination. Lavishly illustrated with over 600 high-quality reproductions of work by Kahn and his associates, incisively presented by a group of acclaimed architectural experts, The Importance of a Drawing is a deep immersion into Kahn s work and his design process. A testament to Kahn s masterly craft, this volume also makes a provocative primer on architectural representation by posing timely questions on how architects use drawings to see, learn, conjecture, and reveal. Destined to become a standard reference on Kahn, this book is an essential addition to the libraries of established designers as well as students of architecture. The result of years of extensive research, The Importance of a Drawing contains original contributions and historical texts from Michael Benedikt, Michael B. Cadwell, Louis I. Kahn, Nathaniel Kahn, Sue Ann Kahn, David Leatherbarrow, Michael J. Lewis, Robert McCarter, Michael Merrill, Marshall D. Meyers, Jane Murphy, Harriet Pattison, Gina Pollara, Colin Rowe, David Van Zanten, Richard Wesley, and William Whitaker

Louis Kahn (1901 74) was an Estonian-born American Architect who called Philadelphia his home. Trained in the tradition of the École des Beaux-Arts, Kahn was later able to fuse a progressive modern agenda with the poise of ancient monuments into a work of seminal and lasting importance. His major works include the National Parliament in Dhaka, Bangladesh; the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California; the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth Texas; and the posthumously realized Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island in New York City. Kahn was a revered educator, teaching at the Yale School of Architecture from 1947 to 1957 and then at the University of Pennsylvania until his death. The editor Michael Merrill is an award-winning architect and educator. He has taught design studio and architectural theory at the Technical Universities at Karlsruhe and Darmstadt and is currently Director of Research at the Institute for Building Typology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. He is the author of Louis Kahn: Drawing to Find Out and Louis Kahn: On the Thoughtful Making of Spaces, both by Lars Müller Publishers.

Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. An astounding treasury of drawings and plans from one of the 20th century's greatest architects, offering unprecedented insight into his design process. "The importance of a drawing is immense, because it's the architect's language," famed architect Louis Kahn, one of the most significant architects of the 20th century, told his masterclass in 1967. While much of his built work has been heavily studied, this publication chooses instead to focus on Kahn's prolific arsenal of drawings and plans, some of which were never realized. The Importance of a Drawing provides an in-depth look into the subtleties of Kahn's designs, featuring incisive analysis from architectural experts and over 600 high-quality reproductions of work by Kahn and his associates. A testament to the architect's meticulous craft, this volume is an essential addition to the library of established designers as well as students of architecture. Louis Kahn (1901-74) was an Estonian-born American architect who worked in Philadelphia for the majority of his life. Inspired early in his career by European medievalism and later the ruins of much older civilizations, Kahn was notable for his ability to meld the modernist tendencies of his time with the classical poise of ancient monuments. Some of his major designs include the National Parliament House in Dhaka, Bangladesh and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. Some of Kahn's unrealised projects, such as the Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island, have since been constructed posthumously. Kahn taught at Yale School of Architecture from 1947 to 1957 and then at the University of Pennsylvania until his death. AUTHOR: Michael Merrill, D.Eng., is a registered architect in Germany and California. Having taught architectural design and theory at the Technical Universities at Karlsruhe and Darmstadt, he is currently Director of Research at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology's Institute for Building Typology. 900 illustrations Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -'The importance of a drawing is immense, because it's the architect's language.' - Louis Kahn to his masterclass, 1967Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974) was one of the most significant architects of the twentieth century and his influence is present today in ways both profound and subtle. Unlike previous publications on Kahn, which have focused on his built work and which considered the drawings foremost as illustrations of these, this is the first in-depth study of drawings as primary sources of insight into Kahn's architecture and creative imagination.By offering a spectrum of close readings of drawings by Kahn and his associates in a series of incisive and richly illustrated essays, this book is at once an intimate artistic portrait of this importantarchitect and a provocative and timely contribution to the current discourse on representation in architecture. For architects and students of architecture, Kahn's lasting significance is not only in the buildings he built, but in how he designed them.Based on unprecedented archival research, engagingly presented by a group of eminent scholars and architects, and lavishly illustrated with over 600 highest quality reproductions, The Importance of a Drawing is destined to become a standard work in the literature on Louis Kahn.; «The Bedeutung einer Zeichnung ist immens, da es die Sprache des Architekten ist.» 512 pp. Englisch.
