L'artiste suisse HR Giger (1940-2014) a acquis une renommée internationale en 1979 pour avoir conçu les créatures fantastiques et les environnements étranges du film de science-fiction Alien de Ridley Scott. Pourtant, avant que ces créations emblématiques ne fassent de lui une célébrité jusqu'à lui valoir un Oscar, Giger était déjà très apprécié dans le monde de l'art international pour son style unique de peinture à main levée et ses paysages de rêve biomécaniques. HR Giger: The Oeuvre Before Alien 1961-1976, publié pour la première fois en 2007 et maintenant à nouveau disponible dans cette nouvelle édition, est le seul livre à ce jour à documenter les premiers travaux moins connus, mais non moins impressionnants, de l'artiste. Ce volume richement illustré retrace sa carrière depuis sa formation d'architecte et de designer industriel au Zurich College of Art jusqu'au développement de sa technique de dessin à l'encre et de peinture à l'huile et sa percée dans l'art. Présentant de nombreuses peintures et dessins anciens inédits ou rarement disponibles, et accompagné d'un essai du célèbre historien de l'art Beat Stutzer, ce volume juxtapose les peintures de Giger avec des œuvres de ses prédécesseurs, notamment Ensor, Fuseli, Goya et Piranesi.

À propos de l'auteur
Beat Stutzer is a Lucerne-based art historian, writer, and curator. He served as director of the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur from 1982–2011 and as curator of the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz from 1998–2016.
