9783330008274: Radio over Fiber Technology for Wireless Communication: An Approach for Designing Simple Low Cost Cellular Base Station

Synopsis

Radio over Fiber technology essentially integrates two worlds- the radio world and the optic world. Thus, one has to face with double share of problems. To meet the explosive demands of high capacity and broadband wireless access, modern cell based wireless networks have the trend to increase the number of cells by the process called as cell splitting and utilization of higher frequency bands. It leads to a large number of base stations to be deployed. In such cases the radio over fiber technique provides functionally simple base stations that are interconnected to a central control station via an optical fiber. Radio over fiber is an analog optical link. In this book we are concerned with the WCDMA signal transmission through radio over fiber link and evaluate its performance. This method outweight the traditional On-Off Keying modulation of laser. The greatest problem with OOK is need of high speed costly ADC and DAC, which totally eliminated in the presented technique. The current method of analog modulation uses Direct Intensity Modulation of laser, and that encounters problem of frequency chirp. This problem is also eliminated in proposed technique of EA Modulation.
