Synopsis

This study deals with the portrayal of the Jew on the German and Austrian stage during the first half of the 19th century, when the vanguard of assimilated Jews entered the mainstream of social, political, and literary circles, and when the struggle for emancipation was initiated and largely won. Jewish portrayals on the stage, however, lagged behind the realities of the situation and Jews continued to be depicted as stereotypes, male and female, with some notable exceptions. By examining the plays of both the Jewish and non-Jewish authors from a sociological perspective, Dr. Lea illuminates the problematic relationship between German and Jew. --- Charlene A. Lea holds a B.A. from the University of Connecticut and an M.A. and Ph.D. in German Literature from the University of Freiburg on a fellowship. Dr. Lea has served on the faculty of Windham College and The Experiment in International Living. At present she teaches English as a Second Language at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
