kart. Etat : Gut. IV, 20, [130] S. : Noten ; 21 cm; Gutes Ex. - Englisch. - Silvanus, together with the plays Hispanus and Machiavellus, survives in a single manuscript (MS. Douce 234). This particular manuscript was acquired by the antiquarian Francis Douce (1757-1834) in 1793 and bequeathed by him on his death, along with all his other manuscripts, printed books, coins, and prints, to the Bodleian Library, Oxford. The manuscript is extremely well preserved. It consists of seventy-two (iv + 68) leaves, of which the first few are blank, save for some notes in Douce's hand concerning the nature of the later alterations to Hispanus and the topical allusions which occur in the play. F.ivr has a recipe for a cure "For ye spleene or greene sicknes," and for a "Salve for a wounde." Ff.lr-15r contain the play of Silvanus; ff. 15v-40r the play of Hispanus (some corrections to this being continued on ff.59r-65r), and ff.4Ov-58v Machiavellus, another St. John's play, of which the concluding scenes are wanting (f.58v has the following note by Douce: "Desunt nonnulla. 1793"). The last few leaves of the manuscript are again blank (excepting f.65v, which has a series of numbers at the top), followed by what appears to be the description of a coat of arms. All three plays seem to have been written in the same neat, late sixteenth-century hand, but there are traces of a second, revising hand in Hispanus.
