Synopsis

Civil war is the most radical form of political conflict. This volume analyses the impact of civil war on society and culture in Greco-Roman antiquity. The collected papers examine phenomena such as tyrannicide, staseis and usurpations from the classical age to late antiquity. The focus lies on the lasting impact violence and disorder had on political discourse and memory culture. In particular, the contributions explore how internal conflicts were staged and performed. Beyond spectacular triumphal celebrations there existed a broad range of symbolic forms of communication pertaining to civil war: rituals of reconciliation, reintegration and restoration as well as acts of commemoration and condemnation. The multidisciplinary volume aims at contributing to a better understanding of the performative and communicative logic of civil conflict within the ancient societies of Greece and Rome.

Henning Borm studierte Geschichte und Deutsch an der Universitat Kiel, wo er 2006 mit einer Arbeit uber Prokop und die Perser promoviert wurde. Zwischen 2003 und 2019 war er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an den Universitaten Kiel, Munster und Konstanz tatig. 2017 habilitierte sich Borm in Konstanz mit einer Untersuchung zur Stasis im Hellenismus; es folgten Gastprofessuren in Tubingen, Innsbruck und Berlin, und 2019 wurde er in das Heisenberg-Programm der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft aufgenommen. Seit 2020 ist er Professor fur Alte Geschichte an der Ruhr-Universitat Bochum. Borms Arbeiten befassen sich vor allem mit dem hellenistischen Griechenland, mit Kulturkontakten zwischen dem antiken Iran und der Mittelmeerwelt, mit Burgerkriegen im Altertum, mit antiker Geschichtsschreibung sowie mit dem romischen Kaisertum in Prinzipat und Spatantike. Johannes Wienand hat in Tubingen, Wien und Konstanz Geschichte und Philosophie studiert. Promotion 2010 mit einer Arbeit uber die triumphale Reprasentation Konstantins des Grossen (ausgezeichnet mit dem Bruno-Snell-Preis der Mommsen-Gesellschaft). Studien- und Forschungsaufenthalte in Pittsburgh, Munchen, Cambridge und Berlin. 2009 bis 2011 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Seminar fur Alte Geschichte und Epigraphik in Heidelberg, seit 2011 Akademischer Rat am Lehrstuhl fur Alte Geschichte der Heinrich-Heine-Universitat Dusseldorf.
