MAK values (Maximum Concentrations at the Workplace) and BAT values (Biological Tolerance Values) promote the protection of health at the workplace. They are an efficient indicator for the toxic potential of chemical compounds. This book contains a list of scientifically recommended threshold limit values for more than 600 chemical compounds. Carcinogens, germ cell mutagens, embryotoxicants, sensitizing substances and those potentially bearing a risk to pregnancy are treated separately. The evaluations are revised annually by a commission of experts. The report is commendable reading for toxicologists, industrial physicians, chemists and for all involved in the establishment of health and safety regulations.

The Annals of Occupational Hygiene, 1991: ...a weighty document including much valuable background material [...] A thoroughly professional publication deserving the attention of all concerned with the setting and application of exposure limits.
The Annals of Occupational Hygiene, 1991:...this is certainly the best publication of ist kind I know, and so far removed from what I expect the HSE equivalent to be that I despair: it should be a compulsory purchase for 1992 European hygienists–to–be, and for all health professionals who wish how the problem of limits should be tackled, and also preferably compulsory bedtime reading for all our burocrats in this field. Given a bit more Europeanization, would it be possible to replace our ACTS with the German Commission? Just a thought. Or hope.
British Polymer Journal, 1986: This volume should be routinely consulted by polymer chemists before undertaking use of unfamilar chemicals, in all cases where hazards are suspected.
Human & Experimental Toxicology, 1995: The DFG deserves thanks for providing an English translation that is easily readable and will encourage wide use of the book in industry and academe.
Analyst, 1994: This report clearly describes the definitions, reasons, and purposes for deriving the guidelines, as well as the applications and investigative directions in the future.
