Synopsis
Here is a detailed review of current research on the isolation, structure and reactivity of the metallothionein and metallothionein-like peptides, long the subject of intensive study. An international team of experts covers all aspects of the metal binding process, including mechanisms of the formation of the metalthiolate clusters (especially mixed-metal clusters), the relationship of structure to reactivity and the relationship between general metal binding properties and physiological roles. Especially important are updates on work on inorganic compounds that potentially model the metal sites in metallothionein, since this structural information is drawn from spectroscopic analysis based on the known coordination chemistry of bound metal ions. "Metallothionein" publishes colour images of MT and also includes extensive tables of model compounds.
