Professor Robert W. Cahn is one of the world s most renown materials scientists. Still active at the University of Cambridge he can look back on an astonishing career in materials science with numerous awards and honours from all major materials societies in the UK, USA, Germany and other European countries, and Japan. He edited various encyclopedias and series on materials science and acted as Editor of several leading journals in this field. Professor Peter Haasen was the original founder of the Materials Science and Technology series while he was Head of the Metal Physics Department in G?ngen. In this role he was among the most influential German materials scientists with worldwide reputation, mirrored in his numerous awards from international Physics and Materials societies like the APS, IoP, TMS and DGM. He deceased much too early in the early 1990s before this major endeavour of his scientific career was completed. Professor Ed Kramer is still active at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) where he holds a joint appointment in Materials and Chemical Engineering. His current research activities focus on polymer interfaces using a variety of depth profiling and microscopic imaging methods. He is Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and among his several awards the High Polymer Physics Prize of the American Physical Society and the Swinburne Award of the Institute of Materials should be mentioned.
