Synopsis
Special feature of this book: the complete list of MAK- and BAT values on a CD-ROM included in the book! The CD-ROM allows easy searches e.g., for substance names or CAS numbers. MAK values (Maximum Concentrations at the Workplace) and BAT values (Biological Tolerance Values) promote the protection of health at the workplace. They are an efficient indicator for the toxic potential of chemical compounds. This book contains a list of scientifically recommended threshold limit values for about 900 chemical compounds. Carcinogens, germ cell mutagens, embryotoxicants, sensitizing substances and those potentially bearing a risk to pregnancy are treated separately. The evaluations are revised annually by a commission of experts. Of particular value are the lists of substances which were reviewed in 2005/2006 and substances being examined for the establishment of MAK and BAT values in coming years.

Einband leicht berieben. - The MAK value ("maximale Arbeitsplatz-Konzentration": maximum workplace concentration) is defined as the maximum concentration of a chemical substance (as gas, vapour or particulate matter) in the workplace air which generally does not have known adverse effects on the health of the employee nor cause unreasonable annoyance (e. g. by a nauseous odour) even when the person is repeatedly exposed during long periods, usually for 8 hours daily but assuming on average a 40-hour working week. As a rule, the MAK value is given as an average concentration for a period of up to one working day or shift. MAK values are established on the basis of the effects of chemical substances; when possible, practical aspects of the industrial processes and the resulting exposure patterns are also taken into account. Scientific criteria for the prevention of adverse effects on health are decisive, not technical and economic feasibility. For the establishment of a MAK value, the carcinogenicity (see Section III) the sensitizing effects (see Section IV) the contribution to systemic toxicity after percutaneous absorption (see Section VII) the risks during pregnancy (see Section VIII) the germ cell mutagenicity (see Section IX) of a substance are evaluated and the substance classified or designated accordingly.
