Large-scalegenomesequencingmeansthatwecan(atleastinpr- ciple)delineateallmacromolecularcomponentsofagivencellularsystem,and microarrayexperimentsaswellaslarge-scaleproteomicswillsoongiveuslarge amountsofexperimentaldataongeneregulation,molecularinteractionsand cellularnetworks. Thechallengeofthe21stcenturywillbetounderstandhow theseindividualcomponentsintegrateintocomplexsystemsandthefunction andevolutionofthesesystems,thusscalingupfrommolecularbiologytos - temsbiology. Bycombiningexperimentaldatawithadvancedformaltheories fromcomputerscience, theformallanguageforbiologicalsystems tospecify dynamicmodelsofinteractingmolecularentitieswouldbeessentialfor:(i)- derstandingthenormalbehaviourofcellularprocesses,andhowchangesmay a ecttheprocessesandcausedisease itmaybepossibletocorrelategenetic propertiesandsymptomsinnewandmoree cientways,basedonanactual- derstandingofhowvariousprocessesinteract;(ii)providingpredictabilityand exibilitytoacademic,pharmaceutical,biotechnologyandmedicalresearche rs studyinggeneorproteinfunctions.
