Based on a course originally given at Harvard University in 1961, this introduction to nuclear and electron magnetic resonance is addressed to graduate students of physics and chemistry. Presupposed is a background in quantum mechanics, some knowledge of statistical mechanics, and a familiarity with distribution functions. A formal course in solid state physics, however, is not a prerequisite. Throughout Principles of Magnetic Resonance, general theoretical methods are illustrated by application to simple problems drawn mostly from solid state physics, with discussion of the physical significance of the results. Problems of varying difficulty are provided, and basic principles are developed in connection with nuclear resonance prior to a discussion of the additional ideas encountered in electron spin resonance. Advanced theoretical topics such as the Wigner-Eckart theorem and the use of the density matrix are treated in the later chapters.
