This overview of models for the assessment of regional acidification and other effects of air pollutants on the environment especially reviews the development and use of mathematical models. The main objective is to discuss the potential of the newly developed regional models for the analysis of the geographic extent of acidification and environmental damage as well as the evolution of environmental responses. Important aspects such as critical loads, sensitivity distributions, data acquisition, regional surveys and model uncertainty are discussed in connection with the application of dynamic models.
