Synopsis
The second edition of this book is the result of collaborative efforts of pathologists from 9 countries. It is more extensive than the previous edition published in 1977. The basic histological classification of the various categories has been retained since it has gained world-wide popularity; however, the individual categories have been described in more detail. A number of new entities have been included: placental site trophoblastic tumour, large cell calcifying Sertoli cell tumour, cystic granulosa cell tumour of infancy, tumour of ovarian epithelial type, testicular lesion of adrenogenital syndrome, and testicular lesion of androgen insensitivity syndrome. Since the first edition, a number of tumour markers have been used in clinical diagnosis, staging, and monitoring the response to therapy. The cells of origin of the two widely used markers have been identified. This revised edition contains 175 colour photomicrographs.

Although some of the histological terms and definitions have histogenetic impli cations, this classification is not meant to be histogenetic. The terminology adopted for individual tumours is based on their general acceptance and world-wide usage. Synonyms are includ ed only if they have been widely used in the literature or if they are considered helpful in understanding the lesions. Controver sial histogenetic terms have been avoided whenever possible. The term tumour is used synonymously with neoplasm. The term tumour-like is applied to non-neoplastic lesions which clin ically or morphologically resemble neoplasms; they are included in this classification because of their importance in differential diagnosis. Because of the many similarities between testis tumours and those of the ovary, an attempt has been made to follow the WHO histological typing of ovarian tumours.
