Synopsis

Since 1980 a considerable amount of scientific research dealing with geochemical processes in marine sediments has been carried out. This textbook summarizes the state of the art in the field research. The topics comprise the sedimentological examination of the solid phase, physical properties of the sedimentary solid phase, pore water and pore water constituents, organic matter as the driving force of most microbiological processes, biotic and abiotic redox reactions, carbonates and stable isotopes as proxies for paleoclimate reconstruction, metal enrichments in ferromanganese nodules and crusts as well as in hot vents and cold seeps on the seafloor. The current model conceptions lead to the development of different types of computer models. This allows one to balance the global mass exchanges between oceans and sediments.

À propos de l'auteur

Horst D. Schulz studied geology at the University of Aachen and at the Free University of Berlin. At the Technical University of Aachen, he obtained his doctorate in 1970. Between 1970 and 1986 he participated in various projects in the field of aquatic geochemistry at the University of Kiel, with a stay as visiting scientist at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Waterloo/Ontario in summer 1980. Since 1986 he bas been professor of geochemistry and hydrogeology at the University of Bremen. His main fields of scientific interest are geochemical processes in seepage water and groundwater, and the processes of early diagenesis in marine sediments. Matthias Zabel, born in 1962, studied geology at the universities of Bonn and Bremen. After his doctorate in 1994 he has held lectures and bas been engaged in marine geochemistry research at the University of Bremen. Participation in national and international projects, as well as numerous publications have shown him to be an expert in this field. His scientific work was honored with the Credner Scholarship of the German Geological Society (DGG).
