Synopsis

New imaging techniques make possible a more exact analysis of the swallowing process and swallowing disorders, known as dysphagia. The authors of this book give a practical approach to the role that imaging plays in the diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia. All the newer modalities such as ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are discussed. The text concentrates on diseases of the pharynx. These include serious disorders resulting from cancer or head and neck surgery, or more common swallowing problems resulting from aging or neurologic diseases. The normal interrelationships among the pharyngeal muscles and the esophagus in healthy patients are also emphasized.
