Synopsis

This book covers the development of Turkish migration policies, particularly since the end of the Cold War. It is necessary to consider the development of Turkish migration policies within the process of EU enlargement and, more generally, within the European integration process, since Turkey is currently involved in accession talks with the European Union (EU). This work sets out a number of elements which can serve for further discussion on the issue of migration into, through, and from Turkey in particular, but also on the debate regarding Turkish accession to the EU and the process of EU enlargement. As a result of the EU enlargement process, interesting changes in Turkish migration policies as well as inside the European Union itself are noticeable. At the EU level there is evidence for increased cooperation towards harmonized immigration policies. On the other hand, Turkey has experienced dramatic changes in its immigration policies inherited from a rather unique, maybe even strange history. From our Western European perspective we know Turkey primarily as a country of emigration. In fact, Turkey itself has a rich history of immigration and asylum.

Biographie de l'auteur

In 2009 Koen received his M.A. from the Political Science Department at the University of Amsterdam. He specialized in European Politics. During his period of study he was particularly interested in the European integration project, European enlargement and in the external relations of the EU.
