Visual music that incorporates gesture is becoming a cultural experience penetrating the way we play and share, constantly fostering new culture phenomena. Across* is a thesis that explores the connection between gesture and visual music. It introduces the concept and design of a gestural visual music system based on the study of historical and existing theories and methodologies. The thesis consists of various researches on relationships between gesture and visual music in historical, technological and cultural contexts. It derives from theories and methodologies on gesture and gestural music design into the domain of visual. Then the thesis introduces several of the author?s practices on gestural visual music in three categories: the use of conducting gesture as a visual interpretation of existing music, the use of augmented gesture to generate simultaneous visual and music with a multi-user experience, and use of public gesture for a networked visual music experience across time and space. These practices not only respond to the topics described in the previous chapters but also raise questions and challenges to move beyond the traditional gestural visual music experience.
