Synopsis
Actuellement, nous assistons à une expansion sans précédent de jeunes occidentaux participant à des programmes internationaux de volontariat et de service (IVS) à court terme (1 à 2 semaines) dans les pays en développement situés principalement dans le Sud. La littérature académique actuelle sur les impacts de l'IVS sur les communautés d'accueil dans les pays en développement est très controversée. Cette étude utilise des recherches ethnographiques, impliquant une combinaison d'observation des participants et d'entretiens semi-structurés, pour obtenir les perspectives des villageois fidjiens des Highlands de la communauté hôte IVS, sur les effets positifs et négatifs de l'accueil des enfants américains âgés de 14 à 18 ans participant à des programmes internationaux de volontariat et d'immersion à court terme (une semaine) dans leur village depuis 1996 .
