The incidence of chronic pancreatitis continues to increase in theWestern world. Its pathophysiology is still controversial, but inrecent years knowledge of its etiological aspects has increased andnew pathophysiological concepts have been presented. There havebeen new developments in diagnosing the disease, especially throughimprovements in imaging techniques such as endosonography, CT andMRI and MRCP. It is generally agreed that the primary approach to treatment ofchronic pancreatitis should be conservative. The treatment ofcomplications, however, is still a matter of debate betweenphysicians, gastroenterologists and surgeons.
