The bed surface of the stilling basin must be smooth, or the crests of the corrugations should be at the level of the upstream bed that carries the supercritical flow; this prevents cavitation in the basin. If jumps were formed on corrugated beds, significant reductions occur in the tailwater depth and length of the jumps.
