Les composites renforcés de fibres sont préparés en incorporant des fibres dans des matrices métalliques, polymères et céramiques. Souvent, ces fibres sont recouvertes d'une couche épaisse nanométrique avant d'être incorporées dans des matrices pour améliorer les performances, en particulier la durée de vie des composites. En général, les revêtements sont préparés par sol-gel ou par dépôt chimique en phase vapeur. Cependant, ces techniques ont des limites telles que deux fibres ou plus sont liées par un revêtement déposé et forment également une épaisseur de revêtement non uniforme sur la fibre, ce qui affecte négativement le composite. Le dépôt de couche atomique (ALD) est l'une des techniques qui peuvent surmonter ces problèmes car il peut déposer une couche très fine avec une épaisseur uniforme. Un réacteur ALD a été conçu, en particulier pour un faisceau de fibres d'un mètre de long. Divers oxydes ont été déposés sur un faisceau de fibres de carbone. Les revêtements sont uniformes et améliorent considérablement la résistance à l'oxydation des fibres. Ce livre fournira donc une nouvelle direction pour la science des matériaux, en particulier pour la science et la technologie des composites.
