Lake ecosystems are vital natural resources which provide humans with services that include water for irrigation, drinking, industry, and dilution of pollutants, hydroelectric power, transportation, recreation, fish, and aesthetic enjoyment. Despite these services, the lake ecosystem continues to be impaired by human activities, exploitation and the degradation of their catchments. Because human effects on lakes are growing, there is increased concern that the lake ecosystem services are in jeopardy.
