Although bilingualism in the southwestern United States has been widely studied, the current corpus lacks material pertaining to the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Code-switching is a bilingual phenomenon characterized by the simultaneous use of two languages in one discourse. Studies have shown that language choice is governed by both linguistic and social factors. Using multi-variate analysis, the study examined the relationship of both linguistic and social factors to the code-switching behaviors of two communities in the southwestern United States; Antonito, Colorado and the Phoenix Metropolitan Area in Arizona.

Mariana Cesar graduated from Arizona State University with a Master's degree in Spanish with a concentration in Sociolinguistics in 2013. She also has a background in Sociocultural Anthropology and is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Mariana currently lives in Arizona where she works as a translator.
