Considérant une énorme augmentation du taux de criminalité et des difficultés rencontrées par les experts médico-légaux dans diverses enquêtes dans la plupart des continents du monde, en particulier dans les pays en développement où les dossiers de résidence manquent. Il est pertinent de savoir qu'il devrait y avoir un autre outil utile dans les enquêtes criminelles en dehors de la méthode traditionnelle connue. Il existe plusieurs techniques utilisées en médecine légale pour identifier les restes humains pendant l'enquête. Les techniques les plus utilisées, bien que peu fiables, sont des comparaisons visuelles de caractéristiques spéciales, par exemple cicatrices spécifiques, tatouages, etc. Le choix des techniques dépend des circonstances et de l'état des restes à examiner. En période de conflits sociaux sensibles, de violences majeures, de catastrophes de masse ou d'attaques terroristes avec de multiples victimes, l'identification des restes devient plus complexe et est entravée par un manque de données pré-mortem. Aujourd'hui, les complexités et les attentes du public ont appelé à l'utilisation/l'application de la technologie ADN. La technologie ADN a été largement acceptée dans les enquêtes criminelles impliquant des preuves biologiques, telles que du sang, des preuves de sperme ou plus, selon la nature des cas enquêtés.
