Synopsis

City and society are two fundamental factors that complete one another. Socio-economic developments of people who live in cities necessitate improvement of cities’ facilities. Amelioration of living conditions in the world has brought along the wish to live in a better environment and created a concept of livability. There is more than one definition of the concept of livability in the literature. Various studies have been made on the subject across disciplines and it was analyzed from the perspective of transportation, education, security, as well as health and environment quality. Istanbul is one of the important metropolises in the world, which has seen a rapid urban growth and improvement in the quality of life during the last 20 years. Beylikduzu was an untouched land in Istanbul city until recently. It has gone through a fast urban development last two decades. The city has become a significant settlement with modern side of the city. This study overlooks the concept of “livability” in Beylikduzu in terms of education, health and security.

Faruk Sarıusta has completed his MA degree in Fatih University, Geography Department in 2013. He has started his doctoral program in Istanbul University, Geography Department at the same year. He focuses on rapid urbanization and livability concepts.
