Le ricin (Ricinus communis L.) appartient au genre monospécifique Ricinus de la famille des Euphorbiaceae et l'une des plus importantes cultures oléagineuses non comestibles cultivées dans divers pays à travers le monde. Son nombre de chromosomes est 20 (diploïde). C'est une espèce monocéieuse sexuellement polymorphe, protandreuse et hautement pollinisée croisée. En raison de sa rusticité, le ricin joue un rôle important dans l'économie des régions arides et semi-arides du pays. Le ricin est considéré comme originaire de la région éthiopienne de l'Afrique de l'Est tropicale et de l'Inde. Les graines de ricin contiennent 40 à 60 % d'huile, qui est une huile non desséchante. Il a une grande utilité industrielle car il est utilisé pour la fabrication de savons, d'huile capillaire raffinée et parfumée, encres d'impression, vernis, résines synthétiques, papier carbone, lubrifiant, pommades, autres cosmétiques, cuir traité, etc. L'huile de ricin est la source d'acide sébacique qui est utilisé dans la fabrication de résines de nylon et de vinyle. L'huile a une viscosité élevée et reste stable à haute et basse température, donc utilisée comme lubrifiant dans les moteurs à grande vitesse.
