La carie dentaire est une maladie microbienne irréversible des tissus calcifiés des dents, caractérisée par la déminéralisation de la partie inorganique et la destruction de la matrice organique de la dent qui conduit souvent à la cavitation. La carie dentaire en raison de son caractère unique en tant que maladie reste l'une des maladies les plus courantes, les plus anciennes et les plus coûteuses de l'homme. Il n'y a pratiquement aucune zone géographique dans le monde dont les habitants ne présentent pas de signes de caries dentaires. La première étape détectable est l'apparition d'une tache blanche sur la dent. La carie progresse lentement une maladie microbienne qui, si elle n'est pas interceptée et terminée au bon moment, peut conduire à des conditions telles que la pulpite aiguë et chronique, le granulome, l'abcès et éventuellement un kyste autour de l'apex de la dent incriminée conduisant à la cellulite.
