Synopsis
Les fondations à jupe fixées sur les bords des fondations peu profondes ont été utilisées pendant un temps considérable, principalement pour augmenter la « profondeur effective » des fondations dans les situations marines et autres où les éclaboussures d'eau peuvent être un problème. Cette méthode d'amélioration ne nécessite pas d'excavation du sol, et ne peut donc pas être limitée par la présence d'une nappe phréatique élevée. Parfois, la fondation peu profonde est délimitée par une obstruction étroite comme un mur. Ce mur a un effet sur la capacité portante de la chaussée, dont le comportement dans ce cas peut être similaire à une fondation à jupe dans laquelle une jupe structurelle est située d'un côté de la semelle. Dans ce cas, le pied est appelé « pied limité ».
