Ce livre décrit l'utilisation de la simulation informatique appliquée à l'environnement d'usine pour un atelier de peinture automobile, afin d'analyser les propositions de modifications futures en usine, afin de répondre à un nouveau niveau de demande de production. Le processus de peinture se fait sur une ligne de production intermittente, avec un transport par grues automatiques. Le système Flow Shop consiste principalement en des opérations de sablage, d'e-coat (électrodéposition) et de peinture de finition (poudre). Le défi consiste en une analyse structurée du processus de production à l'aide de méthodes scientifiques, en l'occurrence la simulation informatique, et pas seulement la connaissance tacite des dirigeants d'entreprise, visant la rapidité et une base solide pour la prise de décision concernant différents scénarios de marché. La solution a été recherchée en tenant compte des connaissances des experts qui travaillent dans le système, simultanément à l'analyse par simulation de production. La méthodologie de recherche-action a été appliquée comme structure pour la simulation et la modélisation informatiques. Le logiciel de simulation utilisé était Tecnomatix Plant Simulation, de Siemens Company. Compte tenu des résultats, une réduction de 64 % de l'investissement requis pour l'augmentation de capacité proposée a été obtenue.
