Les convertisseurs analogique-numérique sont largement utilisés dans le domaine du VLSI et sont principalement utilisés dans les applications telles que l'audio, l'instrumentation, le sismique, la voix, etc. qui nécessitent une valeur de résolution plus élevée. Pour de telles applications, les ADC peuvent être utilisés sur la base de modulateurs de fréquence Nyquist (où l'échantillonnage est effectué avec deux fois la fréquence d'échantillonnage) ou des modulateurs Sigma-Delta (où l'échantillonnage est effectué avec 15 à 20 fois la fréquence d'échantillonnage). L'ADC basé sur les modulateurs sigma-delta est attrayant pour la mise en œuvre VLSI car ils ne sont pas si sensibles aux non-idéalités de circuit et aux incohérences des composants. Cependant, des problèmes tels que la gigue d'horloge et le retard excessif de boucle deviennent de grands défis pour le concepteur, en particulier à haute fréquence d'échantillonnage. Un design spécial doit être appliqué pour surmonter ces problèmes. Le modulateur Sigma-Delta peut être de différents ordres comme le 1er ordre, le 2ème ordre, etc. et peut être en temps continu (moins de consommation d'énergie) ou en temps discret. Ce livre démontre une interface utilisateur graphique (GUI) du modulateur Sigma-Delta du 2ème ordre qui est utilisé pour vérifier les non-idéalités du circuit.
