L'orogène du Crétacé au Paléogène Sevier de l'ouest de l'Amérique du Nord est considéré comme un ancien plateau de haute altitude, largement analogue à l'Altiplano andin moderne. L'orogène Sevier a depuis subi une extension et un effondrement topographique et est aujourd'hui occupé par la province de Basin and Range, une région de ceintures de montagne étroites séparées par de larges vallées bordées de failles. Les modèles géologiques dominants suggèrent que l'arrière-pays de Sevier était un plateau tectonique à faible relief au cours du Crétacé supérieur et du Paléogène. Une nouvelle cartographie géologique de la section de type Formation de Sheep Pass du Nevada indique que le dépôt s'est produit en réponse au mouvement normal de la faille avec le dépôt de la formation basale du col de mouton entre crochets comme le dernier Crétacé basé sur de nouvelles données absolues de contrôle de l'âge. Ces données suggèrent qu'un bassin et une aire de répartition ancestraux occupaient des parties de l'arrière-pays Sevier des dizaines de millions d'années avant le début du bassin et de la gamme modernes. Cette étude renforce donc les comparaisons de l'arrière-pays Sevier à l'Altiplano andin, car des processus similaires de failles normales au sommet du plateau ont été documentés dans les Andes modernes.
