Très souvent, les modules tels que l'entrepreneuriat, la gestion de projet et les compétences générales nécessaires pour un emploi productif immédiat dans l'industrie ne sont souvent pas enseignés dans les universités, ou lorsque cela est fait, ils sont généralement très minimes, d'où la fracture des attentes d'emploi rencontrée par les diplômés et les employeurs. Une enquête basée sur un questionnaire menée en Sierra Leone, impliquant des employeurs, des conférenciers et des employés diplômés, a montré que 57,15 % des employeurs jugeaient raisonnables les compétences de leurs employés diplômés en matière de résolution de problèmes, c'est-à-dire une note de 2 sur une échelle de 6 points où le sixième point était « Je ne sais pas. » Alors que plus de 60 % des employeurs ont attribué une valeur élevée à très bonne valeur au diplôme décerné à leurs employés, 35,71 % ont estimé que leurs compétences en recherche et en analyse étaient faibles ou faibles. Parmi les 13 ensembles de compétences répertoriés comme étant souhaitables de leurs employés, les communications orales, la fidélité et l'intégrité, les capacités d'apprentissage, les connaissances et initiatives spécifiques au domaine ont été classés les plus élevés par 78 % des employeurs qui ont répondu correctement.
