Les petits pélagiques sont des groupes variés de poissons planctivores, atteignant une longueur maximale de moins de 35 centimètres et un poids maximum de moins de 500 grammes et habitent généralement au-dessus du plateau continental, environ 119 espèces de petits pélagiques appartenant à 8 familles et 32 genres ont été signalées dans les eaux indiennes, dont environ 50 espèces soutiennent les grandes pêches. Les petits pélagiques, avec une moyenne annuelle de 7,33 tonnes lakh, ont formé 50,9 % du total des captures pélagiques et 26,9 % du total des captures marines de l'Inde entre 1991 et 2012. La production annuelle moyenne de petits poissons pélagiques est passée de 4,74 tonnes lakh en 1994 à 11,92 tonnes lakh en 2012. Au cours des 22 dernières années, la production de poissons marins a augmenté de 76 % et les prises de petits pélagiques ont augmenté de 151 %, le taux de croissance de la production de pêcheries pélagiques a été nettement plus élevé que celui de la production globale. Les petits pélagiques commerciaux sont principalement la sardine huileuse, les petites sardines, les anchois et les whitebaits et le maquereau indien, ensemble contribué à 99,41 % aux petits pélagiques et 0,59 % restants par demi-bec et bec plein, poissons volants, autres maquereaux et morue licorne.
