La diversification des moyens de subsistance est primordiale pour réduire la vulnérabilité et améliorer le niveau de vie des agriculteurs. L'étude a été entreprise dans les districts d'Uttar Dinajpur et Darjeeling du Bengale occidental, en Inde. L'indice de diversification de la zone d'étude était de 0,46. Le district de Darjeeling était plus diversifié que le district d'Uttar Dinajpur. L'activité la plus diversifiée était le commerce, avec 12,03 % des adultes diversifiés dans le commerce. Des pourcentages importants de femmes (38,31 %) participent à des activités de diversification. Dans le groupe à faible revenu, le degré de diversification augmente avec l'augmentation du revenu par habitant. Plus le degré de diversification est grand, plus la capacité à faire face aux chocs temporaires est grande. La majorité des diversificateurs réussis (40,98 %) ont eu un succès modérément élevé dans leurs activités diversifiées. La majorité des diversificateurs (62,50 %) dans la catégorie de réussite élevée ont été adoptés dans la nature non agricole de diversification ainsi que la diversification agricole. Les facteurs tels que le nombre de bétail, le potentiel de mobilisation des ressources, le contact avec le personnel de vulgarisation, la part du revenu non agricole et le ratio de dépendance étaient des facteurs de discrimination majeurs entre le succès et l'échec.
