Les systèmes logiciels complexes ont généralement une structure modulaire, à partir de laquelle les modules sont éventuellement développés de manière distribuée. Ces modules doivent collaborer pour accomplir leurs tâches fonctionnelles. Cela implique que les modules ont un impact sur d'autres modules, via le couplage dont ils ont besoin pour collaborer. Les modifications ou extensions d'un tel système entraînent souvent une augmentation exponentielle des coûts de développement, d'entretien et de test. Par conséquent, l'intégration d'idées innovantes dans le système existant est restreinte. Dans ce travail, l'application de la théorie des systèmes normalisés dans le domaine des systèmes d'automatisation a été étudiée. Comment appliquer cette théorie ? Quelles implications peut-on attendre pour les environnements de développement typiques, les architectures et les normes industrielles existantes ? Est-il possible d'introduire des contraintes sur le système existant afin d'atteindre une évolutivité plus élevée ? Cette recherche a commencé à partir d'un certain nombre de modèles de référence, c'est-à-dire trois normes industrielles et les éléments de systèmes normalisés, qui sont des définitions théoriques des blocs de construction logiciels évolutifs. Les résultats incluent des artefacts logiciels qui sont conformes à la fois aux normes industrielles et à la théorie des systèmes normalisés.
